Hunting and being hunted for a job

Daylight Savings robbed me of one hour's sleep today!! Goddammit, and it couldn't come at a better time when the UKEC Career Fair was on the next day! Didn't really prepare for any interview, might as well made use of the experience from Genting's AC.

Went to the fair at 11am and realised that it was freakin packed. I thought everyone wanted to stay in UK, then why you all wanna search for jobs back in Malaysia? WTF?? At least every company was giving away really good freebies. Astro, Deloitte and Intel were giving away free bags which were really useful for going for shopping hahaha. The best was Bank Negara I guess, as they gave away a pewter keychain! I thank you all for the keychain, taxpayers in Malaysia!!

I just realized that the HR has a very important role in recruitment as they must exhibit the company's culture and values. However, I was quite dissapointed with quite a few HR whom anyone could tell weren't bothered about searching for talent. One of them was from a reputable management consulting company with an office in KLCC. So freaking lanci, and didn't even bother to promote her employer and just sitting down and talking to a few people with a bored look. With an attitude like that, it gave me a perception that everyone in the company would be like that, so I couldn't be bothered to even leave a CV with them.

Went to the Securities Commission booth next as it was one of the companies that I hoped I could enter. Was greeted by their Director of Manpower, who strikes me as a person who is very friendly and approachable, yet very experienced. She invited me to their talk at 12.30 about what the SC actually does in Malaysian capital markets. She also slotted me for a job interview with her at 3pm, and I haven't even researched SC yet!!

The interview with the director was really a good experience. She said beforehand that it was only going to be a 15 minute interview, so I was really worried that she would not be able to know me well. I also would have thought that interviews were where they grill you and make you feel uncomfortable and ready to pounce on your mistakes. She focused her questions on my internship in Citibank, asking what I have learned there and how it might be useful. She also role-played with me a few times as customer-manager, so it was a really good experience. 15 minutes really flew by, and when she finished the interview, she offered me a conditional job offer on the spot! Happy giler haha!! But I still need to get at least a merit for my MSc and pass a medical and assessment..which shouldn't be too hard, I hope ^^

Now, with a concrete goal to aim for, I can now focus on my postgrad and not worry on being a freelancer when I come back to KL haha...
